Air and vapour barriers permitting a reduced energy consumption

The loft apartments are not only particularly comfortable. By the expansion of the rooms directly under the roof, additional space reserves may also be used sensibly. This is the reason why a well-insulated roof is a must to keep energy consumption within limits. This not only an advantage for your wallet but results also in environmental protection. In the course of the roof conversion, high-quality insulation should therefore be installed from the outset since it ensures that as little heating energy as possible can escape during wintertime and that the summer thermal insulation is improved. Of course, the high-performance thermal insulation has its price. To maintain its functionality in the long term, it is therefore essential to protect it by means of a vapour barrier or by a vapour inhibitor placed on its inside.

DELTA® offers you the right air and vapour barrier/brake for every requirement. If you click on the products below, you will find detailed information and technical data on the DELTA® air and vapour barriers/brakes.

Why is a vapour barrier/brake so important?

Vapour barriers and brakes are intended to limit the amount of water vapour “migrating” into the component. The technical term for this is water vapour diffusion. The objective is to prevent an impermissibly high level of condensation (condensation water) in the component - especially in the thermal insulation. On the one hand, this would impair the effectiveness of the insulation; on the other hand, a too high level of condensation may result in a massive damage to the wooden construction of the roof structure. As efficient protection, the vapour barrier/brake ensures that the air humidity from the living spaces cannot even penetrate the roof structure by damaging it.

Vapour barriers/brakes not only prevent the moisture penetration into the insulation but also the air from flowing through the thermally insulated layers of the components.

What is the difference between a vapour barrier and a vapour inhibitor?

Although the two terms are often used interchangeably, the vapour barrier and the vapour inhibitor are not exactly the same thing.

The vapour barrier differs from the vapour inhibitor when it comes to its diffusion resistance. In this context, the decisive factor is the SD value, which is specified in meters. It stands for the "water vapour diffusion equivalent air layer thickness" and describes the water vapour permeability of a component layer or if a building material (such as for example a vapour barrier or vapour inhibitor). In this context, the following principle applies: the higher the SD value, the less water vapour quantity the material lets through.

The standard DIN 4108-3 distinguishes between the following definitions:

  • The diffusion-open layers are component layers with an SD value amounting to ≤ 0.5 m.
  • The diffusion-inhibiting layers are component layers with an SD value amounting between 0.5 m and ≤ 10 m.
  • The diffusion-inhibiting layers are component layers with an SD value amounting between 10 m and ≤ 100 m.
  • The diffusion-blocking layers are component layers with an SD value amounting between 100 m and <1,500 m.
  • The diffusion-tight layers are component layers with an SD value amounting to ≥ 1,500.

There are also vapour inhibitors having a flexible SD value. The product DELTA®-NOVAFLEXX, for example, changes its SD value according to the air humidity between 0.2 m in very humid and 5 m in dry ambient air.

High quality air and vapour barriers for every requirement you may have

The DELTA® air and vapour barriers/brakes enable a reliable and efficient protection from the inside, permitting a measurable reduced energy consumption. In conjunction with the vapour-permeable DELTA® roof underlay and lining membranes and the coordinated accessories from the adhesive range DELTA®, the air and vapour barriers/brakes offer tailor-made combination options to stop and reduce the level of diffusion and to seal the insulated construction in an airtight manner.

The DELTA® membranes are characterised by a maximum level of robustness for a long service life: For example, the product DELTA®-NOVAFLEXX is particularly easy to lay thanks to the laminated special fleece and the product DELTA®-REFLEX additionally impresses with its high tear strength.
